BRIEF
The existing Spanish-mission residence was in a tired condition and had received very little love over the years. It required an extensive renovation and additional living areas, bedrooms and bathrooms, to meet the requirements of a modern family home and a quality level to match the rest of the homes in this prestigious area. A new double garage and pool was also requested by the owners.

A heritage overlay exists on this site so we were required to keep the front of the home and ensure that any modern additions could not be readily seen from the street, keeping intact the integrity of the streetscape. An impressive existing gum tree was located in the middle of the rear yard. Also, a significant jacaranda was located to one side of the rear yard. Both of these trees were protected and were required to be retained.

OUTCOME
Our challenge was to design a modern home that felt spacious within these constraints.

The existing front rooms are retained as bedrooms and a new external courtyard is located next to the existing jacaranda, situated on the side boundary. We created a two-storey meals area with a two-storey window which faces onto this, celebrating the tree. The rest of the new living area wraps around this space and takes advantage of the views of the tree, allowing for areas of dappled sunlight and a sense of expansive space.

The upper-level houses two further bedrooms, a bathroom, and a rumpus area. The rear yard enjoys the mature existing gum tree in the middle, a new pool and spa to the rear boundary, and a two-car garage.

The result is this beautiful, spacious, light-filled forever home with four bedrooms, two living areas, two bathrooms, a pool, and a double garage in one of Melbourne’s best suburbs.
