BRIEF
The owners came to us with a brief to create a spacious family home with natural light, separate living areas, and a usable rear yard within this modest site. The street had a heritage overlay so the existing façade and front rooms of the home were required to remain, and no upper storey addition could be readily seen from the street.

OUTCOME
The front of the home retains the two front rooms which have become the main bedroom and lounge room.
Within the new extension, the method we chose to ensure this area appears spacious was to raise the ceiling in the family room adjacent to the rear open space. A large frameless glass widow was incorporated to visually extend the interior space out into the yard, up to the rear fence line. When sitting in the Family Room, you feel part of the outdoor space. Adding to this effect is a carefully located skylight and an operable louvre roof to the alfresco area.

Within the upper level, we have located two bedrooms, a bathroom and rumpus room. The existing roof provides an opportunity to create a significant storage area.

With detailed joinery and beautiful finishes throughout, this is a home that feels much larger than the front suggests. It has become the owner’s little piece of luxury in Albert Park.
